Ebony mag on yoga (1975)

I’ve just stumbled upon “Yoga: Something for Everyone,” an article from the September 1975 edition of Ebony. The mag was part of my Saturday morning beauty shop routine as a child. I can smell my hair being burned to a crisp with a hot comb right now.

No. Really. I can.

Make sure you check out the quotes from Freda Payne and Herbie Hancock. Here’s an interesting one from Angela Davis, commenting on how yoga helped her cope as she was awaiting trial in California on charges connected to the Soledad brothers case in 1970:

“Just the physical part was a help, in my case, because I couldn’t leave the cell for regular exercise. I have never used yoga as an end in itself but merely as a means of preparing myself for a more effective struggle. As a result of yoga, I am more energetic. I am able to go and appeal to people and to organize them to do the kinds of things that are vital to our freedom.”
