Hi there. My name is Rashunda Tramble. Welcome to Yoga&Soul. The name is a take on the phrase (and song) “Body and Soul.”
Yoga
I humbly consider myself a student of yoga, which means I’m a student of life. The latter is a painful cliché, but true. I am in no means an expert and the missives I post on Y&S probably make that hilariously clear.
I discovered yoga when I moved to Zurich in 2003, but only seriously started walking the path in 2008. It was then that I learned that what we westerners call “yoga” is actually only one part of an eight-limbed spiritual system. This system was introduced in the Yoga Sutras, written by Patanjali around 250 BCE1. Y&S shares my trials, tribulations, and hopefully, triumphs as I attempt to make this system my life2.
…and Soul
The yoga community is wide and varied, consisting of practitioners from all walks of life and cultures. Mainstream yoga media is finally starting to understand this, but we (meaning those of us who are non-white) can’t leave the responsibility on the editor-in-chief’s desk. We need to let these outlets, and fellow members of the community overall, know that we are here. By sharing my path not only as a yoga student, but as a yoga student who happens to be black, I hope to do just that.
Take care,
Zurich, 1.1.11
